What a 40 yard actually holds
- Whole-house demolition debris
- Commercial buildout or tear-out
- Warehouse or storefront cleanout
- Large new-construction site
- Bulky, light debris: framing, siding, furniture
This is the box for a whole structure coming down or a whole building being emptied: the framing, siding and roof deck off a teardown, the fixtures and shelving out of a storefront, or everything left behind in a warehouse. One 40 yard on site means the crew keeps loading instead of waiting on a swap.
Watch the weight, not the fill line. The 40 yard includes the same 4 tons as the 30 yard, so it is the right call when the pile is big and light. Dense debris like shingles, plaster and tile hits the allowance long before the box looks full, and anything over bills at $75/ton off the scale ticket. Concrete, brick and dirt belong in our heavy-debris container instead.
The prohibited list does not change with size: asbestos, medical waste, radioactive material, microwaves and fluorescent tubes, and a few others stay out of every container we deliver. Full list on our FAQ page, and our crew will flag anything questionable at pickup.
How a 40 yard gets placed
At about 20 feet long and 8 feet tall, this one needs a real spot: a straight, level run for the truck to back in, room behind the box for the rear door to swing open, and nothing low overhead like wires or branches. We still roll it off slowly onto its rear rubber rollers and front landing pads, whether it is going on a driveway, a parking lot or a jobsite. There is no lid, so plan on a tarp if the job runs through rain or the debris is light enough to blow around.
On your own driveway or job site, no permit is needed. If a 40 yard has to sit in the street or another public right-of-way because there is nowhere else to put it, most Southeast Michigan cities require a right-of-way permit from the city. Call us first and we will tell you what applies at your address before delivery day.
When the 40 yard is more than you need
Most jobs do not need our biggest box. A gut renovation or a heavy construction load usually fits the 30 yard for $124 less, with the same tonnage included. A whole-house cleanout or a kitchen remodel belongs in a 20 yard. Save the 40 yard for the jobs where you would otherwise be ordering two containers.

40 yard questions, answered
How big is a 40 yard dumpster?
About 20 feet long, 7 feet wide and 8 feet tall (approx.). It is the largest roll-off we run and holds roughly 12 pickup truck loads. The walls are well over head height, so everything goes in through the hinged rear door rather than over the side.
How much does a 40 yard dumpster cost?
$599 flat for one day or $650 for three days, with 4 tons of disposal, delivery and pickup included. Weight past the 4 tons is billed at $75 per ton straight off the scale ticket. Addresses farther from our Dearborn yard can add a delivery fee, quoted upfront.
When should I pick the 40 yard over the 30 yard?
When the debris is bulky rather than heavy. Both sizes include 4 tons, so the 40 yard buys you room, not weight: framing lumber, siding, furniture, cabinets and packed-out commercial spaces. For dense loads like shingles, plaster or tile, the 30 yard usually reaches the weight allowance first and costs less.
Will a 40 yard dumpster fit in my driveway?
It needs about 20 feet of straight, level length plus room behind it for the rear door to swing open, and clear overhead space for the truck to roll it off. Most jobsites, parking lots and longer driveways handle it fine. If your driveway is short or has low wires or branches, call and we will talk through the placement first.
